dowel, birch ply, foam, faux leather, emulsion, sesame seeds, salt dough.
Bread making has always been represented as time and labour intensive, a natural balance that can’t be rushed. In 1961 the Chorleywood bread process was invented, meaning bread could be produced a lot more quickly and mechanically. More recently chemical additives have been used to create “quick bread”.
I have been making work about bread and sandwiches because I like how they can been used to represent or mark time. The meal deal is the friend of the worker with little time on their hands, although it’s believed that it heavily contributed the reason lunch hours are now only half an hour long. We even use the invention of sliced bread as a marker in time. (Before that, the phrase was “the best thing since wrapped bread”). The bread bun can be a hastily made packed lunch or a leisurely barbecue with friends.
In the 60s automation of work was an exciting prospect. The idea of having a lot more leisure time was reflected in the interiors of our homes, with conversation pits, mini bars and home stereo systems. It was thought you’d have more time to put your feet up.
