NO MAYO, 2022
polystyrene, wood, perspex, gloss paint, buttons, bluetooth speaker.
The “Story Sandwich” is a popular way to teach children how to write anecdotes. The first and final act is the bread, and the fillings represent setting, conflict, resolution, etc. JB Priestley wrote a series of plays about time. In one of them, Dangerous Corner, the act of putting on the radio completely changes the outcome of the story via a butterfly effect.
‘Mayo Radio’ is what I imagine the radio would look like if the narrative of Dangerous Corner were a sandwich. I chose mayonnaise, because it is the only thing there’s a specific advertised lack of (“No Mayo”) when you buy a meal deal. It’s frequently mixed in with more expensive fillings as a cheap space filler, the way the radio fills the silence so damning truths don’t come out in Dangerous Corner.
