since sliced bread, 2022
birch ply, clear perspex, pocket lint.
Bread making has always been represented as time and labour intensive, a natural balance that can’t be rushed. When trying to picture the concept of time, i see an endless loaf, with each slice as a moment. I also think of archeological time built up through layers of rubbish.
Just as bread rising relies upon reactions taking place and not a set amount of pre-determined time, I want to explore other ways of measuring time that don't rely upon the clock. Through archeology we measure time through accumulated layers of things that have been discarded. Pocket lint builds without you realising and you end up carrying archeology in your pocket; bus tickets, recipts, tissues, gum, they all carry a time stamp from when you aquired them, and once and a while you might shed them by putting them in the bin and adding to society's accumulated archeology. By filing my pocket lint in a small bread draw each month, I'm building a picture of a year's worth of accumulated time through rubbish.
